Investment Management and Wealth Management

Think WealthPro for "Wealth Procedure"
This discussion covers:

We have learned a lot in over two decades helping people make investment decisions. Perhaps the most important lesson has been that in order to achieve the greatest chance of success investors need to have a clearly defined approach that they use consistently over long periods of time. Our key words when thinking about investments are words like Systems, Strategies, Discipline, Consistency, Process, Procedure, Patience, and Competence. Although these words and what they refer to may not feel as “sexy” as chasing the latest hot fad investment, we believe to the core of our being that they represent the best pathway to long-term investment success and financial independence.

The first part of our investment management process is client education. It is important that as our client you understand some of the basic fundamentals of investing. This includes acknowledging the risks involved in investing and understanding the historical performance of various asset classes such as stocks, bonds, and foreign securities, among others. Recognizing the emotional component of investing and how it so frequently derails an investor's ability to succeed will increase your ability to avoid making mistakes that so many others make. We teach you the importance of Asset Allocation and about the different styles of Asset Allocation that people practice today. It is also important to understand how your time horizon fits into the equation.

WealthCraft®

We call our series of investment advisory portfolio management systems WealthCraft®. Our investment approach strives to bring great capability to each important step in the investment process.

Our Six-Step Investment Process 1

We believe that the likelihood of achieving success in your investment strategy is greatly improved by adhering to a disciplined investment process. Our process involves a clearly defined sequence for making decisions.
  1. Financial Analysis. This involves our becoming thoroughly familiar with your situation and defining your risk and return objectives. We also prepare a written Investment Policy Statement

  2. We develop an overall Asset Allocation strategy. This part of the process is critical. Well accepted academic studies have demonstrated that the most significant factor influencing your results will be your Asset Allocation decisions.

  3. We enlist the assistance of Institutional Investment Firms to assist in implementing our Asset Allocation plan. We call on the resources of an entire team of experts including distinguished academics. And have developed strategic alliances with some of the most respected Institutional Investment Firms in the world. These firms were selected because they demonstrate:
    – Substantial research across Global Capital Markets
    – Asset Allocation and Portfolio Strategy as a Core Competency of the firm
    – Investment Policy Committees composed of Senior Investment Professionals
    – Disciplined Investment Processes
These strategist firms bring us impressive credentials. They manage trillions of dollars, employ hundreds of Ph.D.s, Chartered Financial Analysts, and other experienced investment personnel. They have several thousand research analysts on staff at over one hundred locations world wide. Generally the services of these institutions are only available to very large investors and the extremely wealthy. Typically to hire these firms directly, you may need to have a $5 to $25 million minimum account size.

  4. Once the Asset Allocation decisions have been made, we determine the specifics about the actual investments that we are looking for. Mutual funds are often our investment vehicle of choice. We and our strategists can select from a broad universe of mutual funds and managers. The funds selected in these programs are no-load funds, or funds from load fund families with the loads waived.

Another approach that we regularly use is to establish privately managed investment accounts where we are hiring professional money management firms to manage portfolios targeting specific investment approaches. These portfolios typically hold individual stocks and bonds, and provide for access to top quality money managers and full time attention on a fee basis.

  5. As market conditions change and portfolio balances drift with market results, the portfolios we supervise are revisited on a regular basis, both to monitor results and to rebalance the investment assets.

  6. We report to you. We provide an entire communications program including monthly statements directly from the custodian holding the account assets. Our office sends you easy to read, detailed, quarterly performance reports showing exactly how you are progressing.2 At year-end we provide a tax planning report. We also send a quarterly newsletter and provide daily Internet access to your account information via this web site.

Lastly, after some time passes we repeat the process to constantly adapt the portfolio to your needs as they change.

Specialized Investment Solutions

We have a number of specialized investment solutions delivered through alternative channels designed to meet specific needs. For example, we have developed relationships with several companies serving the 403(b)(7) – TSA retirement plan market place. If you are a participant in one of these plans, we may recommend one of these company’s systems as they offer many unique features and benefits for TSA participants.

We maintain full brokerage capabilities3 and may choose to serve clients who don't qualify for our fee based Managed Asset Allocation Program as described above using investment products delivered using a traditional commission schedule.

Tax Management

If your investment portfolio is a taxable account, not factoring in tax implications can significantly reduce the chances of it meeting the financial objectives you are working towards. We employ a special focus for taxable accounts, which concentrates on enhancing after tax returns and controlling the timing of taxable events.

Rollovers

We assist many clients with rolling over their 401(k) or other pension plan either at retirement or when changing jobs. In many cases we can rollover accumulated investment assets even while our clients are working. We can help analyze the various options and assist you in determining which choices best fit your objectives. Unfortunately, rollovers are also an important consideration when we are working with the beneficiary of a worker who has passed away. We have assisted many families with this issue.

Tax Deferred Annuities

Tax Deferred Annuities often, Variable Annuity Plans3, have become popular forms of investment. While we believe that these investment vehicles built within insurance contracts often have merit for use in after-tax situations, we generally avoid them inside of retirement plans such as IRAs, TSAs*, and the like.

Today the features of annuities have become much more complex and, at times, confusing than they were in years past. Often an array of investment options may be available. Some annuities are now available without the surrender charges that were standard (and often still are) on most annuities offered in the past. We have a wide range of annuity vehicles available for our clients use and if the accumulations within the annuities are large enough, we may be able to manage the annuity investment using the procedures that we discussed above.
